DIY vs. pro calculator
Doing it yourself isn't free. Count your parts, any tools you'd buy, your time and the chance you'll end up calling the pro anyway.
Before you decide on cost alone, run the job through Fix it or call a pro? Some jobs need a licensed pro no matter the price. If you're hiring, read how to compare quotes first.
Common questions
What hourly value should I use for my time?
Use what an hour of your time is worth to you. Some people use their take-home pay per hour; others use a lower number for a weekend they'd enjoy spending on a project. There's no wrong answer.
What does the redo chance mean?
It's your honest guess at the odds you'll get stuck and have to call a pro anyway. If you've never done the job, a higher number is realistic. The calculator adds that share of the pro's quote to your DIY cost.
Should cost be the only factor?
No. Safety, permits, warranties and insurance matter as much as money. Gas, electrical panel, structural and roof work belong with licensed pros no matter what the math says.
